Antique English Axminster Rug, circa 1890 - While Axminsters generally belong within the European design tradition, like Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets, this extraordinary example fuses such taste with Persian carpet design. The oval medallions are Western or European, as is the coloration of soft reds and black on dominant tans. But the intervening vinescolls are reminiscent of Sultanabad carpets from Iran.. The design of the border is also purely Persian, although the entire composition hangs together with a remarkable decorative unity, suggesting that East and West are not so far apart after all..

Antique Amritsar, India, early twentieth centuryThe luxurious elegance of Moghul court carpets comes alive once more on this splendid antique Amritsar. Here the medallion format and the arabesque detail converge generally with Persian style and taste, but the serrated leafy details and lush naturalism of the drawing recall the great Moghul forerunners. Unlike the latter, however, the palette is cool and restrained, relying mostly on soft shades of mauve and gold with a delicate tone-on-tone effect that is supremely decorative. Antique Khotan Oriental Rug, circa 1900 - Many Khotans have designs with one or more medallions; this one has rows of small medallions arranged as an allover design, like Turkoman rugs from further west. Smaller secondary forms between the medallions also recall Turkoman rugs, but the intervening pale blue cloud forms are an extraordinary addition to such a design. These betray the debt of Khotan weavers to Chinese tradition, as does the spectacular cloud border that envelopes the field. Still, what is most impressive is the unusually large size of the carpet, a scale rarely encountered in attained Khotan rugs.

Lotus palmettes and rosettes fill the spaces between the dominant element - circular arrays of curving sickle leaves adapted from the classical "Herati" design. The red and golden hues of the field contrast nicely against the main blue-ground border with its magnificent arabesque vine scroll. The finely proportioned detail of this border also sets off the large-scale forms of the field in a savvy opposition that helps to vary the overall density of the design.

Scalloped cornerpieces with similar detail correspond to the central medallion, while delicate sprays of flowering vines and branches swirl across the field in between. Serial palmette cartouches comprise the border, reversing the subtle color contrasts of the field. While the design is almost dazzlingly complex, it is mollified by the tone-on-tone coloration to achieve a more neutral decorative effect.
