Antique Persian Khorasan Rug, circa 1900 - A complex array of interlacing vines unfolds in radial symmetry across the champagne field of this supremely elegant antique Khorassan. The vines are so thinly proportioned however, that they recede into the background, yielding pride of place to the exquisitely drawn palmettes in shades of soft blue and aubergine. A delicate cartouche main border flanked by minor borders with fine vinescrolls provides the perfect counterpoint for the sweeping grandeur of the field. Antique English Axminster Rug, circa 1900 - This classically elegant antique Axminster is the English counterpart to the Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets produced in nineteenth-century France. It shares the same taste for delicate architectural scrolling cartouches filled with graceful naturalistic sprays of carnations and garlands of pansies, all against soft ground tones of pale apricot, ivory, and mauve. The entire effect is enhanced by the lustrous, velvety pile. Style: Axminster Origin: England Size: 12 ft x 13 ft 03 in (3.66 m x 4.04 m)   « Less

Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThe field of this sumptuous antique Sultanabad has a richly detailed Herati pattern on a deep blue ground. Only when we stand back does the underlying allover diamond effect this design begin to emerge, and then only subtly. The elegant 'turtle' palmette border on a red ground offers a contrast in design, scale, and coloration to the field, giving the carpet the right touch of balance and variation. Antique Bakshaish Persian Carpet (Bakhshaish or Bakhshaysh) - An allover pattern of bold, graphic medallions in soft reds, blues, apricots, and saffron unfolds across the deep cocoa field of this spectacular antique Bakshaish. Indeed the cocoa ground almost seems to form a secondary allover star pattern. Although all these design elements are of classical Persian derivation, the drawing and articulation the forms has the abstract clarity and impact of the finest Kazak or Konya rugs. The boldness of the field is beautifully balanced by the fine scale and drawing of the classical turtle border on an ivory ground. Bakshaishes are generally prized for such qualities, but even among its type, this example is exceptional. Style: Bakshaish Origin: Persia Size: 9. ft 10 in x 13 ft 03 in (3.00 m x 4.04 m)   « Less

43571 Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth century This magnificent antique Tabriz brings to life once more the grand tradition of classical Persian court carpets. At the center of the composition is a dazzling circular medallion reminiscent of a cathedral church window. Arabesque spandrels at the four corners of the field repeat the color scheme of the medallion, while sinuous spiraling vinescrolls and a host small flowers and palmettes fill the intervening blue ground. An arabesque vinescroll main border on pale blue frames the field with flanking terracotta minor borders to unify visually with the spandrels in a larger framing effect. Tabrizes are famed for their fidelity to classical Persian weaving, but they seldom recreate the old masterpieces with such deft precision. Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, circa 1900. Antique Khotans like this are known for their eclectic blend of Central Asian and Chinese design traditions. Here the Field has a classic Tekke Turkoman design of octagonal medallions or ‘Guls’ linked by an allover linear grid, with secondary cruciform motifs in the intervening spaces. The inner borders, in contrast are Chinese, while the outer one with its pomegranate design is classic Yarkand or Khotan. The overall impression is remarkably unified and decorative despite its eclectic origins, no doubt because of the soft consistent palette used throughout the composition. Antique English Carpet, circa 1900 - Delicate red fleurons float in staggered rows against a deep salmon ground on this stately antique English carpet. A jewel-like trellis edging makes the transition to the framing border of closely packed roses and stems. The patterned complexity and light palette of the border provides and excellent contrast to the simpler design and richer color of the field in this masterful expression of design counterpoint. Art Deco Swedish Arts and Crafts Carpet, early twentieth century This extraordinary Art Deco Swedish Arts and Crafts carpet with its striking design of allover medallions harks back to medieval Scandinavian textiles, and perhaps to Turkoman carpets as well. Deep blue green octagons with cruciform ornaments are set against a rust cocoa ground with similar cruciform fillers. A bold zig-zag border adds a different and unexpected element that nicely complements the finer ornament of the field. Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, late nineteenth century A classic East Turkestan design of large and small golden medallions floats amidst a warm red field on this stately antique Khotan. The larger scale and solid form of the central medallions are countered by the smaller openwork medallions to either side. A system of narrow borders of Khotan type frames the field – with a diagonal meander on the inside and a cloud medallion on the exterior. The crisp drawing and forceful geometry of the design represent the Khotan tradition at its best. Style: Khotan Origin: East Turkestan Size: 6. ft 09 in x 13 ft 04 in (2.06 m x 4.06 m)   « Less
