Antique Savonnerie, France, nineteenth centuryAn elegant open medallion design graces the field of this elegantly restrained antique French Savonnerie carpet. The inner central medallion is a life-like cluster of roses hovering within an open oval field of soft ivory with a hint of blush. The oval field is framed by an array of flowering branches emitted by cornucopiae, again against the same ivory ground. A narrow spiral garland rendered with tromp-l’oueil naturalism frames the entire composition. The lustrous glow of the wool pile sets off the delicate drawing and pastel coloration to great effect. Midway between pictorial and ornamental design, the sandy gold field depicts elegant horseman with bows chasing animals amidst delicate sprays of flowers evoking the natural world. The white or ivory areas are woven in silk. Antique Indian, late nineteenth centuryThe late nineteenth century witnessed an extensive revival of rug weaving in Northern India that brought to life once again the great weaving traditions of the Mughal period. Although rarely have such Indian carpets managed to equal their illustrious forerunners. This magnificent example, however, is every bit the peer of the great Mughal court hunting carpets and the Safavid Persian masterpieces that inspired them. Here mounted bowmen accompanied by elephants and footmen cavort across a rich terracotta field laden with floral and animal abundance. Deer, antelope, and lions flee before their pursuers while two dragons rear in the lower corners. A lavish arabesque strapwork and cloudband border encloses the field, set against an aubergine ground that nicely contrast the terracotta ground within it. Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth centuryWhile antique Tabriz carpets are known for their fidelity to classical Persian rug design, rarely do they approach such forerunners as closely as this magnificent example. Here a multi-lobed circular medallion filled with arabesque detail spews spiraling vinescrolls into a rich terracotta field bounded in turn by blue-ground vinescroll cornerpieces. The running vine and palmette border is much smaller in its scale and detail, nicely contrasting the grandeur of the field. The palette of the carpet as well as its design is faithful to classical tradition, relying as it does on the harmonious interplay of rich reds, soft greens and blues, and tan or ivory. Oushak, Turkey, Late 19th Century - Recalling the classic Ottoman Turkish court carpets of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this magnificent Oushak has an allover design of blue arabesque star medallions in staggered alternation with smaller blue medallions with indented diamond contours, all set against a warm red field. A profusion of flowering vines in ivory, saffron, and soft green fills the areas between the medallions. An angular arabesque vinescroll border on a red ground frames the field, enclosed by saffron minor borders that provide the requisite contrast. Rarely do Oushaks bring to life the greatness of their ottoman forerunners with such grace and panache. Antique Ziegler Mahal /Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth century. This magnificent Ziegler carpet was housed in the dining room of Sigmund Freud's home, 20 Maresfield Gardens, in Hampstead, London. In 1938, the renowned father of psychoanalysis arrived with his family in London as refugees from the Nazis in Vienna. They brought with them all of their possessions, including carpets and rugs, furniture, and a collection of his prized antiquities. Here his son Ernest and housekeeper Paula Fichtl recreated for him the same working environment that he had in Vienna. Freud bought most of his rug collection from dealers like his brother-in-law, Moritz Freud, 1857-1920 (same surname), who lived in Berlin. The field of this carpet has a stunning design of palmettes and tendrils strewn across a brilliant ivory ground that is elegantly complemented by the gold ground border.
