The political scene in Quebec has always been a source of inspiration for artists and social commentators - as well as for poster artists. As Marc Choko writes, inhis definitive works on Quebec posters: ''In Quebec, as in other parts of the world, the end of the 1960s and the decade of the 1970''s were marked by an abundance of social movements. The radicalization of certain independant political parties (those who wished to separate from the rest of Canada) after October 1970, the powerful rise of unions.... were reflected in the manner and material of a vaste number of militant posters. This one celebrates the ''5 jours des prisonniers politiques quebecois'' (5 days of Quebec''s Political Prisoners), and appears to have been a 5 day arts festival with concerts, film screenings, panel discussions and auctions, all for the benefit of political prisoners. In excellent condition, with pinholes in extreme corners. This poster was in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and is only one of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. The poster measures 18 x 24 inches and is unframed. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. From what I can tell (I love Internet research!), the Cirque Divers in Liege (Belgium) was a performance space used by artists is many genres. It is unclear whether the space still exists, or indeed which kind of acts performed there. (Ephemera is often the only thing that remains from theaters, music halls and other spaces... we should be grateful to have posters as pieces of social history!). This two sheet poster (in two separate sheets) measures, 26 x 18 x 2 and is in excellent condition. From what I can tell (I love Internet research!), the Floreffe was/is a kind of 1970''s fringe festival which took place in Belgium. (It appears to still take place every June). Even though there was some affiliation with the French ministry of culture, it looks to me like a pretty exotic group of performers: a drag queen wrestler (or maybe just a hairy woman in bikini bottoms), a clown with big shoes and a bigger horn, a couple of misplaced ballerinas... Posters almost always make me smile, and this one is no exception: it is full of humor, irony, and no small amount of affection. This poster was in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and is only one of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. Purchased in Europe, we found this piece to be a striking statement of political reality of war-time Europe. Rough partial translation from French reads: Committee of Coordinated Resistance Movements: We have noticed that foreigners are presenting themselves in different stores and farms in the Grand La Louviere region and requisitioning items supposedly under mandates from the resistance. We invite our comrades to refuse these requisitions and to notify the central office of infractions of this nature. The only authorized requisition forms must carry the seal of the organization and the signature of the responsible boss, but also the seal of the Neighbourhood Administration and the signature of its mayor. Signed, the heads of the resistance, Chateau Ponceau, Hamoir Street, La Louviere. Signed on 16 September 1944 and printed by L. Charlier Wrey of La Louviere. In very good condition - we had this piece professionally linen mounted in order to preserve its historical and physical integrity. Printed by IJE Buschmann in Antwerp. Measures 11 x 17 inches. This oversized poster was recently purchased in Europe. Published in Paris by Atelier Faria, it was the publicity poster for an entertainer who advertised that he ''could do everything''. What ''everything'' consisted of is unclear, but given the fact that his head is a globe and he seems to be thinking hard, we think he must have been some type of clairvoyant. The poster has some signs of wear, a few repairs, but is generally in very good condition. It was folded at one time but has been professionally mounted on linen and is ready to be framed. Measures 39 x 54 inches. Please check out our other items for sale on this site, and e-mail with any questions or requests for additional photos. Thank you for your interest.
