Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA classical Persian Herati pattern repeats in rhythmic symmetry across the pale salmon field this exciting antique Sultanabad. Sultanabads like this are widely appreciated for their bold, at time rustic treatment of traditional Persian designs. Here, in place of the minute scale and precision that generally characterize the Herati pattern, the scale is grand and the drawing kinetic and spontaneous. The softness of the salmon, sage green, and ivory palette offers an effective counterpoint to the sweeping animation of the design. An undulating vinescroll border with an alternating two-tone ground provides a graphic frame for the whole composition, picking up on the treatment of the cornerpieces within the field. The small-scale and finely drawn design is uncustomary for an Oushak of the nineteenth or early twentieth century.
