Antique American Hooked Rug, circa 1900 - A highly unusual scale or feathered pattern makes up the field of this charming antique hooked rug. Soft magenta scales form a diamond pattern amidst a field of light green. The scales are all highlighted to give the illusion of three-dimensionality. While hooked rugs are generally designed in abstract spiral or ring patterns, or as pictorial compositions derived from folk art, this one utilizes a pattern drawn from the geometric repertory of ancient Roman mosaic, making it as rare as it is lovely. Antique Persian Esfahan Rug, Origin: Persia, Circa: 17th Century - This splendid little antique Oriental Esfahan is a masterpiece of classical Persian rug design. A blue-black circular medallion filled with arabesque vines and flowers is surrounded by richly detailed palmettes and vines against a burgundy ground. Similar palmettes comprise the border, but set against a black ground to echo the medallion. Rarely do design and color converge so effectively. Vintage Arts and Crafts Carpet, Europe, circa 1900 - A reciprocal pattern of circles and concave squares constitutes the field of this charming little Arts and Crafts rug. Small rosettes fill the circles while the concave squares are divided into triangular facets of differing color. A closer look reveals that the triangles collectively form diamonds enclosing the circles. As part of this blend of subtlety and graphic boldness, the main design utilizes dark linear emphasis while most of the design is articulated by softer shifts of color. ON HOLD Antique Kashmir "Millefleurs" Twill Tapestry / Shawl, Circa Date: 18th Century - Finely woven Kashmir tapestries of this kind are modeled on the Pashmina wool "Millefleurs" or "thousand flowers" carpets of Mughal India. Although composed as an abstract pattern based on subtle, barely visible concentric and intersecting circles, the floral detail is highly naturalistic and derives from European painting and textiles. The overall format with a kind of pointed arch or niche may derive from prayer rugs. The whole composition is meant to be seen as a delicate tree of life emanating from an amphora-like vase between sprays of palm leaves. The palm leaves sprout in turn from a shallow basin at the very bottom of the design. This rug featured in a couple of the best publications about antique shawls and since it is such a great example, the Asia Society had borrowed it when they had the “Treasures of Kashmir” exhibit.
