Antique American Ingrain Carpet, early twentieth century - The floral repeat design of this charming antique Ingrain carpet relates more to American textiles and wallpapers More »
Antique American Ingrain Carpet, early twentieth century - The floral repeat design of this charming antique Ingrain carpet relates more to American textiles and wallpapers of the late nineteenth century than to traditional carpet design. The autumnal palette of leafy floral sprays are highly ordered in their rhythmic repetitions even though they have the appearance of complete freedom or asymmetry. This greatly heightened by the absence of a border, which gives the entire composition a boundless, infinite quality. While few rugs can claim to be authentically American, this is certainly one than can.

Antique Bessarabian Kilim Rug, circa 1900 - A lovely array of floral sprays in soft green-blue, mauve, pale apricot, and soft red floats happily across the deep chocolate More »
Antique Bessarabian Kilim Rug, circa 1900 - A lovely array of floral sprays in soft green-blue, mauve, pale apricot, and soft red floats happily across the deep chocolate ground of this wonderful antique Bessarabian kilim, surrounded by a vinescroll border with similar coloration. Bessarabian weavings combine the color sensibility and weaving texture of Turkish kilims with a naturalistic drawing style derived from western European rugs and tapestries, and in this example the blend is simply superb. The colors of this piece - simultaneously rich but soft - are especially beautiful.

Antique American Hooked Rug, circa 1900 - Ultimately, the ornamental the detail of this extraordinary antique American hooked rug is exceptionally life-like or realistic. Sinuous honeysuckle vines with additional carnations and grape leaves interlace across the field enclosed by a beanstalk border. The coloration too is life-like but decorative, and it appears particularly nicely against the warm rosy tan ground. Hooked rugs are prized for the homespun charm of their drawing and subject matter, but this one has an incomparable sophistication.

43447 Antique Sarouk Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth century - A dazzling design of flowering, golden spiral vines spreads across the rich red field of this exceptional antique Sarouk Farahan. Within each circle of vines is a wreath-like cluster of green leaves and flowers reminiscent of holly. The wreath-like effect continues into the floral vinescroll main border, but set against a gold ground in contrast to the red field. Minor vinescroll borders flank the main one, accenting its framing effect. Farahans are famed for their lovely color, but they rarely achieve the sumptuous intensity of this impressive piece.

This antique Oriental Agra carpet is quite unusual with stepped diamonds filled with angular rosettes sprout tendrils and flowers, creating a kind of "mina khani" or trellis More »
This antique Oriental Agra carpet is quite unusual with stepped diamonds filled with angular rosettes sprout tendrils and flowers, creating a kind of "mina khani" or trellis in dark colors across the pale field. Since the medallions have the same color as the ground, the overall effect is open aod lace-like. This effect is heightened by the border, which also shares the same ground color, giving the carpet a harmonious unity and density of design.
