Antique Kashan, Persia, early 20th century This luxurious antique Kashan has richly ornamented ogival medallion surrounded by an ivory field burgeoning with delicate vine sprays and palmettes in shades of red, mauve, and soft blue. The main border of arabesque vines is dazzling in its complexity and fidelity to classical Persian design. Set on a red ground it deftly echoes the outer part of the medallion in color and detail. Like the ornamental detail, the long proportions of this carpet also derive from the great classic forerunners of the Safavid period. Size: 9. ft x 19 ft 06 in (2.74 m x 5.94 m)   « Less

Antique American Hooked Rug, late nineteenth centuryWhile antique American hooked rugs are generally known for their naïve folksy charm., this lovely example takes inspiration from the more sophisticated Axminster and Aubusson rugs that were being made in Britain and France at this time. Here intersecting borders and circles create a large grid whose compartments are filled with naturalistic floral sprays or bouquets, and with cruciform scroll designs in the carious circular nodules of the grid. The pastel palette set on a soft ivory ground is classic Aubusson, as is the style of the floral sprays. Nonetheless, a distinctly American folk art charm still comes through the design, however subtly. Size: 11 ft x 19 ft 06 in (3.35 m x 5.94 m)   « Less

Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth centuryTabriz workshops were renowned for their ability to recreate the great masterpieces of classical Persian carpet weaving. In this lovely example we see again the classic garden carpets produced in Northwest Persia during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Two perpendicular borders intersect at the center, dividing the field into four quadrants like an actual Persian garden. Within these are rectangular compartments filled by trees of life supporting animals and birds, each a little carpet of its own. Narrow borders continue the framing effect of those that divide the field. The soft, almost tone-on-tone coloration departs from classical precedent, but it makes this an outstanding decorative rug. Antique Kerman Rug, central Persia, 1900's - An allover spray of soft blue vines and palmettes repeats rhythmically across the golden apricot field of this lovely antique Kerman. While they seem to be a continuous pattern, on closer inspection they turn out to be separate sprays of vines floating freely in juxtaposition, which explains the lightness and freedom of the pattern despite its complexity. The variegated color of the field provides an impression of depth and infinite space, again making the design appear to float freely. Size: 11 ft 07 in x 19 ft 09 in (3.53 m x 6.02 m)   « Less

Antique Aubusson, France, late nineteenth centuryThis supremely elegant antique Aubusson carpet has a grand architectural frame replete with moldings and lush, neo-classical embellishment. The field, roughly oval, appears window-like with a coloration so soft that one can barely discern the ring of vinescrolls and the floral bouquet at the center. The outer border with its straight garland and ‘bead and reel’ moldings is somewhat darker, imparting a certain gravity to this otherwise airy composition. Aubussons are known for their delicate precision and grace, but this one is exceptional even within its type. Size: 16 ft 07 in x 19 ft 10 in (5.05 m x 6.05 m)   « Less

Antique Kurdish Long Carpet, Persia, late nineteenth century Elegant scalloped ogival medallions repeat in staggered allover symmetry down the length of this supremely refined antique Kurdish long carpet. Life-like clusters of flowers, exceptional in their realism fill the ivory-ground medallions. The deep navy blue ground of the field functions essentially as graphic outline or reinforcement for the scalloped and delicately serrated contours of the medallions. The narrow vinescroll border set on a rich terracotta ground provides the perfect framing contrast to the scale and palette of the field. Kurdish rugs are prized for their color, but rarely do they achieve the depth and range of the colors evident in this outstanding example. Size: 6. ft 10 in x 19 ft 10 in (2.08 m x 6.05 m)   « Less
