Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryAntique Sultanabads are prized for their spirited and monumental rendering of classical Persian designs, but few can offer anything approaching the distinctiveness of this outstanding carpet. And while Sultanabads with medallion designs are not rare, it is unusual to find one with such a classically Persian scalloped circular medallion. The rich floral detail within the medallion and across the field is also remarkable for its fidelity to Persian carpets of the Safavid era, as are the palmettes in the border. But above all it is the splendid coloration of the carpet, with such extensive use of green, salmon, and pale blue, that recalls the great Persian masterpieces of the sixteenth century. More reminiscent of a Serapi or perhaps a Farahan, the field has a monumental medallion design with cornerpieces, all filled with arabesque vinescroll ornamentation. The ‘turtle’ vinescroll border is beautifully rendered on a finer scale that contrasts nicely with the monumentality of the field. Antique Ukrainian Rug, late nineteenth centuryA lion rests majestically on rustic terrain framed by a floral medallion at the center of this magnificent carpet. The medallion is set amidst an open field framed only at the upper and lower edges by thin garlands. While the design and coloration draw upon the grand repertoire of French Savonnerie carpets, the all-wool foundation and weave show that it was made in the Ukraine under the Czars as an imperial Russian counterpart to Savonnerie production.
