Continental Textile, early twentieth centuryDesigned in the French Aubusson tradition with its delicate painterly drawing and soft coloration, this elegant textile depicts a Venetian cityscape in the manner of painters like Canaletto. In the distance across the lagoon we see Piazza San Marco with the Palace of the Doges, A gondola approaches the quay where a young nobleman in Renaissance dress courts a lady, attended by her servant. The delicacy of the drawing goes hand in hand with the gentle tonality and the aristocratic subject matter.

Antique Peking Carpet, China, early twentieth century - This antique Peking from China is the epitome of restrained elegance. Four oblong medallions containing pairs of dragons float in a field of fretwork that is so finely drawn that it virtually recedes into the background, making the carpet appear like an open field composition. Several narrow borders frame the field - a blue-ground vinescroll enclosed by two others with ivory ground, nicely echoing the color effects of the field.

Antique Persian Tabriz carpet, circa 1900The precisely geometric, almost austere elegance of the open field format on this regal Tabriz is enlivened by the fine, exquisitely detailed Herati patterning of the concentric medallions and cornerpieces. The larger, sweeping forms and rhythms of the arabesque border effectively balance and contrast with the miniature geometry of the Herati fillers on the field, just as its cinnamon ground counterpoints the pale champagne ground of the field.

Antique American Hooked Rug, early 20th century - Here is an authentic piece of Americana. This incredible antique hooked rug presents the American Eagle, the National Bird, with a heraldic shield made out of Old Glory. But instead of holding lightening bolts in its claws like the Presidential Seal, this eagle holds the olive branch of peace. The lovely earthen colors - tans, browns, and yellow - make the rug a wonderful decorative piece as well.
