Antique Finnish Rya, mid twentieth century - This striking Finnish Rya or long pile rug is a classic example of the type. Originally developed as bedding coverlets, these rugs are luxuriantly soft and comfortable. Their design were traditional graphic and abstract. Art Deco Rug, Continental Europe, circa 1935 This classically Art Deco rug treads the line between decorative abstraction and representation. Many of the forms in the field seem to depict landscape elements - mountains, rivers, sun and clouds - but it is difficult to be sure. It all works just as well as free-form design or pattern, carefully coordinated with effective color contrasts and juxtapositions. The border of arches and volutes works similarly, as pattern or as a stylized rendering of architectural form. Though rendered in the medium of decorative textile, this piece is nonetheless a first-rate modern painting.   « Less
