This is a rare & important American Vermont early 19th century life size, cast iron dog made at the Gray Iron Foundry in Poultney, Vermont circa 1835-1845. This rare piece is in superb condition. There is no damage to head, tail or body, no repair, replacement, nor screw holes into feet. This very fine example is similar to a matched pair which flank the entrance to the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont. This lovely example has survived in a superb state of preservation. Fine early Art Nouveau or Late Victorian cast iron umbrella or cane stand. This charming and useful piece is done in a naturalistic motif and is far less heavy and more graceful then the usual. The narrow back undulates like a growing vine. The base or "drip pan" is slightly asymmetrical and also naturalistic in design with flowers and a central stylized male face with mustache and goatee.
