Rare 19th C American Portrait Miniature Signed By Artist: Anna Claypoole Peale (1791-1878) Of Anna Bachman Landis Of Landisville, Pennsylvania Signed Lower Right Anne C. Peale & Dated 1822. Anna Bachman Landis (1785-1846) The Sitter Was Born To Michael Bachman And Elizabeth Swarr, Members Of A Large And Important Mennonite Family In Pennsylvania. When She Married John ''Swamp'' Landis, She Joined A Larger And More Important One. The Landis Family Had Immigrated From Switzerland. Reverend Benjamin Landis Purchased Land In What Is Now East Lampeter Township, Four Miles East Of Lancaster, Pennsylvania From The Canestogoe Indians In 1718. His Grandson, John ''Swamp'' Landis Was Born In Lampeter Township In 1782. A Farmer In Centreville, He Married Anna Bachman. They Had Three Children Who Reached Maturity. In 1829, John Became Shopkeeper, Before Becoming The Postmaster Of Landisville. This Miniature Is Set In A Gilded Copper Locket Frame With A Braid Of Hair In The Aperture On The Reverse. Height: 2 3/4'' Inches High. The Artist Anna Claypoole Peale (1791-1878) Was The Daughter Of James Peale, The Niece Of Charles Willson Peale And The Granddaughter Of James Claypoole (Philadelphia''s First Portrait Painter). She Was Trained By Her Father And Encouraged By Her Uncle, Who Took Her To Washington In 1818, Arranging For Her To Paint President James Monroe And General Andrew Jackson (Yale University Art Gallery). Peale Began Exhibiting At The Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts In 1811, And Was Elected An Academician In 1824. The Only Other Femaile Artist To Receive That Honor Was Her Sister, Sarah Miriam Peale, With Whom Anna Shared A Studio. Anna Had A Thriving Business, With Studios In Baltimore And Philadelphia, And Trips To New York, Boston And Washington. Her 1829 Marriage To Reverend William Staughton Ended In Tragedy When He Died Only A Few Months After The Wedding. She Married Again In 1841 To General William Duncan, Apparently Giving Up Her Work At That Point. Anna Claypoole Peale Was, Without Doubt, The Most Important Female Miniaturist In American. « Less

Rare Documented Matching 19th C Parlor Portrait & Portrait Miniature Of Theophilus Parsons Chandler By New England Artist Albert Gallatin Hoit. Circa: 1845 Canvas Size: 23 1/2'' X 29 1/2'' Original Classical Gilt Wood Frame: 32 1/2'' X 38 1/2'' & The Portrait Miniature Is 2 1/2'' X 3'' With Original Hair In Aperture On The Reverse. Both Items Are In Untouched Estate Condition Direct From The Family. A Rare Surviving Example Of An Artist Relationship With His Client In Completing Both Portrait & Portrait Miniature By The Same Attributed Artist:Albert Gallatin Hoit. The Large Portrait Is Signed A.G.H. (Lower Right) On Its Original Stretcher, With Original Gold Gilt Classical Shaped Frame & Portable Ivory Miniature. Both Paintings Have Original Frames. Identical Subject With Same Glasses, Clothes & Poses! Quite Rare To Survive Together! A.G. Hoit was born in Sandwich, New Hampshire, December 13, 1809, to Gen. Daniel Hoit and Sally Flanders. Siblings included William Henry Hoit. Albert graduated from Dartmouth College in 1829. He married Susan Hanson in 1838; children included Anna M. Hoit. Hoit ''devoted his life to portrait painting, first at Portland, Maine, in 1831, and then in Bangor and Belfast, Maine, and St. John''s, New Brunswick until Boston, Mass., became his permanent home in 1839.'' He also travelled in Europe, ''Oct. 1842 to July 1844, ... enjoying the galleries of art in Italy, Paris, and London.'' He created portraits of Pietro Bachi, Johanna Robinson Hazen, J. Eames, and others. He painted a portrait of Daniel Webster ''for Paran Stevens, which hung for years in the Revere House, Boston, and now belongs to the Union League Club, New York.'' He was affiliated with the Boston Artists'' Association; and exhibited at the gallery of the New England Art Union in the 1850s. In 1848, he kept a studio on Tremont Row in Boston, and lived in Roxbury. By 1852, he''d moved his studio to Washington Street. He died in Jamaica Plain, December 18, 1856, at age 47. Works by A. G.
