Edwards settled in Los Angeles in 1889. He was active there both as an artist and a newspaper publisher. In his leisure he made painting forays into the desert area around Palm Springs and the high Sierra. Edwards died in Los Angeles on April 27, 1954. Member: Calif. Original Lithograph on fine rag paper, signed and numbered 89 of 100, by American Artist, Louis De Mayo, born 1926, Original Print, Size: 17" X 30",Phoenix artist, De Mayo, indeed has his own tale to tell. What bold, daring and controlled simplicity fill his canvases come from a personal selection of activities that the artist has witnessed in his expeditions to the Indian reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. Noble Indian women are engaged in daily tasks or stand casually before the geometric expanse of a woven rug. The males are dramatically arranged whether individually, in pairs, or larger groups, their great forms filling the picture surface with energy and vital presence. In motion or at rest, these figures are adorned with colorful and exotic ornaments and ritual objects...masks, fringed belts, beaded necklaces. Because De Mayo professes to portray a strong sense of isolation in all his paintings, it is not difficult to project further meaning here that relates to the cultural. Says De Mayo, "it is the social issue of the isolation of the Indian from the mainstream of American life. Always a struggle to maintain the traditions." De Mayo has a strong emotional attraction to the Yaqui and their black garb. He grew up seeing women in black. He is Italian and his people too are dark skinned. A strong sense of roots, his own and that of the Indian. De Mayo emphasizes the importance of good design and subtlety of suggestion rather than explicit photo-realism. Details are kept to a minimum and the viewer's imagination quickly fills in the missing information so that the lively figures appear lifelike and credible. Source: Southwest Art .   « Less

Oil on Canvas Painting, Pal Fried. the Elegant “White Shoulder” Study, in original Gilt Wood Frame, Excellent condition. Pal Fried, (1893-1976), Hungarian American artist, was born in Budapest and studied at the Hungarian Academie under Professor Hugo Pohl and in Paris under Claude Monet and Lucien Simone. Under Pohl's influence, he executed many portraits, nudes and Oriental scenes in pastel. He was also greatly influenced by the French Impressionist School of Renoir and Degas. His works are listed in the Fine Arts Book. Fried's signature on his paintings was Fried Pal, last name first in the European manner. He is sometimes listed in auction catalogs and reference books erroneously under the letter "P". While traveling in Spain and Africa, Pal Fried widened and enriched his palette, which gave him mastery of light and movement. After returning to Paris, Fried concentrated on portraiture in which he also became a recognized master. He exhibited his work in Muucsarnok in Budapest. In 1947, after WW II, he emigrated to America where he taught at the Academy of Arts in New York and developed his own unique style and technique. In the 1950s and 60s, Pal Fried gained popularity while living and painting in Hollywood. He made the rounds and often painted high society women and celebrities including Marilyn Monroe and the Gabor sisters. In New York, he painted portraits of Herbert Lehman Governor and Senator from New York, Will Rogers and other notables. Fried, an artist of the Hungarian school, worked with pastels and oil paints. He was known for being an important figure painter, and most often depicted beautiful young women, nudes, ballerinas, Parisian society women, western scenes, horse racing, and an occasional seascape. His artwork has gained much deserved recognition and notoriety and has become highly collectible. Many of his paintings hung in the famed Haussner Restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland. Pal Fried died in New York City at his home, on March 6, 1976, at the age of 82.   « Less
