Antique Khotan Oriental Rug, late nineteenth centuryThis elegant antique Khotan rug has considerable presence. The design is reserved graphically, with only three medallions, small cornerpieces and several floral spays in the open pale tan field. The spareness of the design heightens the effect of the rich coloration of these forms in brick, blue, and goldenrod, colors which recur in the cloud and volute border. This masterful opposition between dense patterning with deep color against light, open space makes this example exceptional among Khotans.
