Antique Bibikabad, Persia, circa 1900An allover design of palmettes and swirling vines repeats rhythmically in staggered horizontal rows across the field of this sumptuous antique Bibikabad. The color of the ground, alternating between a deep cognac and ivory, helps to articulate and distinguish the successive rows, giving then a cartouche or shield-like quality. A finely drawn ‘turtle’ vinescroll main border on a cognac ground continues the design texture and coloration of the field, while ivory-ground minor borders echo its striped effect. Despite the rich complexity of the design, the warmth and restraint of the palette adds a note of relaxed elegance.
