Antique Khorassan rug from Persia, circa 1900This magnificent antique Khorassan combines two great classical Persian rug traditions - that of the garden carpet and the prayer rug. Tall pillar-like trees rise up from the landscape as their leafy branches with pecking birds fill out the surrounding space. Lions recline at their trunks amidst smaller cypresses. The trees do double duty as columns for the prayer arch above. The prayer niche here is actually a window that opens on the a view of paradise in the form of a garden. Elegant vinescrolls on a golden ground comprise the borders, providing a framing contrast to the blue-ground field.
