Antique Nain, Persia, twentieth centuryAntique Nain carpets like this are famed for the minute precision of their weave and the elegance of their design. Here a central arabesque medallion of circular form spews forth an array of arabesque finials so finely elaborated that each is actually a miniature medallion of its own. A circular border encloses the field, defining concave triangular cornerpieces with arabesque interior details against a deep aubergine ground. A main border of palmettes and arabesque festoons encloses the field, repeating its soft creamy coloration. It is unusual that a virtuoso piece of this kind is also a first-rate decorative carpet.
