This listing is for a Rare Pennsylvania Lowback Windsor Arm Chair, circa 1750-80. Historically derived from the Queen Anne Period Corner Chair, it features flattened sawed arms, each curving outward to form handholds. The arm crest at the back rests over the arms with a lap joint, separating the inner ends of the arm rail, originally screwed and pegged from the underside, screws now absent. The spindles are straight and short, forming a gallery around the seat of the chair, each tenoned through the arm rail and locked in place with a split-wedge. The D-shaped (almost certainly Poplar) seat is flawlessly formed, with a carved channel around the inside and outside of the spindles (also known as a "rain gutter"), a soft slope in the middle and cresting at the front-center. The legs join through the surface of the seat using X-split wedge joints. The underside around the edges of the seat are heavily chamfered, the underside cracking joined with butterfly dovetail joints. The turned maple ring- baluster turned legs are maple, each joining through the seat with a split-wedge locking each in place. They are heavily turned with deep voluptuous proportions, uncharacteristically heavy for Philadelphia, almost certainly a provincial interpretation of the Philadelphia design in other parts of the state. An H-form stretcher locks each leg firmly in place, carefully turned bulbous along the asymmetrical side stretchers, a thick turned medial stretcher with a bulb flanked by tight rings, flanked by balusters, flowing into a short turned shaft before very uniquely swelling again at each end of the medial stretcher - not a feature typical in Philadelphia. The finish is a very early Green paint over what appears to be the original Red painted surface - we've found no other colors beneath these layers. It is a crusty and wonderful surface with a deep worn patina in every square inch.
This is the most beautiful Windsor we've ever carried, original in every square inch of the chair, uniquely carrying it's original surface protected beneath the green paint. With strength in all joints, this chair will easily last many generations to come, treasured carefully in your home and enjoyed by your family. It is a collector grade piece, a rare find and a beautiful work of art.
Woods: Due to the painted surfaces, some of the woods we cannot positively identify; we also have not had any woods micro analyzed and are just using our eyes to identify each wood.
Arm crest, legs and stretcher: Maple (we also believe the turned arm supports are Maple, but they are covered in paint and difficult to clearly see)
Curved arms: Oak (appears to be Red Oak)
Spindles: Hickory
Seat: Appears to be Poplar
Measurements:
28" wide x approximately 24" total depth; 29 1/8" high (to the arms, the highest point); seat is 17 1/2" above the ground.
Condition:
Visually Outstanding Condition
Original red paint below a later (but very early) green surface. Significant wear throughout. Five dovetail joints repair cracks to the seat from the underside. Screw holes beneath crest are empty; pegs are still in place. Slightly uneven leg surface, one with a tiny metal button lift.

Pair of Louis XVI Antique Style Fauteuil Arm Chairs

Item # 120010RPW22
Visit us at www.sillafineantiques.com for a full slideshow and large inventory of additional items!
This is a beautiful pair of recently crafted Louis XVI style fauteuil arm chairs, each with a "corduroy" style upholstery of a rust-appeal in simply outstanding condition. The pair are light and airy in design, the carved frames reserved and graceful, allowing the eye to appreciate to total beauty of the chair rather than focusing on a single point. The backs are trapezoidal in form, the exposed carved molded frame flowing into the upholstered arms, the curved handholds resting over the cabriole arm supports. These flank the very comfortable and deep upholstered seat, stuffed over the frame and lined with piping over the molded apron. The chairs rest over turned, tapered and fluted legs over plain ball feet.
These are a great pair for anyone decorating their home, looking for that perfect pair for daily functional use with a classical design that has been one of the most popular forms for nearly three hundred years. Relatively new, these are a young pair that will last a lifetime if well cared for.
Measurements: 24 1/4" wide x 25" deep x 36 1/8" high to crest; 19" high to seat
Condition Report:
Visually Outstanding Condition
Upholstery is in excellent condition with no noticeable flaws. Only the most minor of dings and abrasions here and there. Very sturdy and strong throughout. « Less

This is an early pair of Barcelona style chrome-framed chairs, probably circa somewhere around 1950-60. Technically, these are considered reproduction Barcelona chairs, though the design is clearly in close relation to the original chairs by Mies Van Der Rohe (German, b. 1886-1969). The only chairs considered original creations by the designer are the six chairs he brought with him from Germany upon emigration to the United States. The design was later sold to Knoll, at which point the chairs began being impressed and marked - these Knoll chairs are typically what are found being retailed as an "Original" Barcelona chair, and are still excellent collector works.
The pair we have listed are not marked or attributed to any company, though the attention to detail is exceptional. Upholstered in it's original aniline cowhide, the grains and overall character of the thick leather remain in outstanding condition. The chair retains it's original buckles and snaps, the leather straps secured using rivets to the frame, most of the jigsaw joinery covered with straps - we have photographed some that are visible, but have not taken apart the joints to look for serial numbers. The chrome plating has retained it's brilliant finish with a light tarnishing growing across it slowly. One chair has a slight rightward bent to the frame.
This is an outstanding pair offered at a wonderful value for anyone passionate about this classic design.

Item # 120010QPE08
Visit us at www.sillafineantiques.com for a full slideshow of pictures as well as a large selection of other fine furniture!
This is a cute little bench in the Louis XV taste, probably original designed as a Lady's Vanity Bench for in front of a dressing table or bureau. It is remarkably versatile though, having diminutive height with full proportions for the seat and width (20" height to the seat), making it an excellent selection for in front of a desk or as a reading chair in the corner. The crisply carved fruitwood is noteworthy, the crest a complex work of outward flowing acanthus leaves over S-scrolls flanking scales, the entire crest topped by a small flower. It flows into a tight carved frame of thin lines, backswept and barrel back to culminate in curved arm supports that flow directly into the cabriole legs with acanthus carved knees, each terminating over french toes of multiple scrolls. The upholstery is heavily buckled, the webbing and springs will need to be completely repaired, but is structurally incredibly sturdy and strong and ready for another century of life. This is a fun piece that can be implemented into so many design scenarios. With some fresh upholstery, it will quickly be the most charming part of the room.

Queen Anne Style Mahogany Corner Chair over Pad Feet
England, Late 18th Century
Visit us at www.sillafineantiques.com for a full slideshow of pictures as well as a large selection of other fine furniture!
This is a nice example of a Queen Anne Style Corner Chair, crafted after the period, probably during the last few years of the 18th Century in England where the Georgian influence is clear in the feet and bold splat formations. The proportions throughout follow the boldness of the overall chair, the crest arm rail of unusually thick mahogany primaries, curved softly for comfort as it flow into the scrolling hand holds. The splat takes on a vasiform with unusually elaborate scroll cut work mirrored in both sides, tenoned into the separate shoe piece at the base, a fine plinth formation that swells before joining the splat. The slip seat is needlepoint upholstered and nearly square, rounded at the frontmost corner and framed in a molded lip, resting over an interior frame nailed with original rosehead nails along the inside. The corners are constructed with pinned tenon-mortise joinery. The front leg has a generous cyma-curve to the cabriole leg as it terminates in a padded foot, of close similarity and possible predecessor to the drake foot design that was prevalent during the last quarter of the 18th Century in Georgian and Chippendale designs. The other three feet are plain stump feet under slightly tapered legs.
This is a wonderful corner chair that will bring life and character to any room. With a broad number of design scenarios available, from the most common use to highlight a lonely corner, to the comfortable chair in a library or study beside a side table, or as a bedroom vanity chair, this is a chair that you will be able to implement in your home as it changes and shifts through the years. It is a timeless piece that can be enjoyed functionally and regularly in the home as you live with and enjoy this fine chair.
Measurements: 19 1/2" deep (from foot to foot) and 30" wide (from arm to arm) x 32 1/2" high; seat is 17 1/4" high

This pair of painted chairs are associated, meaning they are not an identical pair, but are rather upholstered to match and have very similar age and surfaces. However, as you examine the carvings and overall design, it quickly becomes clear that they were designed by different craftsmen during a very similar timeframe. Carved of the solid, the fruitwood frames have a nice molding about them, the side chair with a fruit-basket carving at the top and along the apron, the bergere arm chair with a plain molded frame flowing into the upholstered full arms. Each has a deep plush removable cushion, though both chairs should be reupholstered to truly experience them correctly. The fruitwood surfaces are covered with a thin gesso beneath the tarnished green paint, the oxidized white of the plaster showing through here and there on each distressed frame. With their preserved and original patina, these would make excellent "deconstructionism" subjects, to be upholstered in a way that the underpinnings and overall construction is exposed and unfinished. However, with a fine silk damask, they also would make outstanding chairs in a formal living room amongst Louis XV decor. Sturdy and strong in all joints, this is a pair that can be used functionally and regularly in your home without concern. They are built to last many lifetimes and in terms of construction, they are still quite young. Well preserved, these chairs will easily be enjoyed for a lifetime.

This is a very handsome hoopback example crafted with utmost precision featuring carved bamboo stiles. The steam bent hickory crest rail is perfectly formed, bombe before concaving in to tenon through the plank seat. The seven maple spindles are graduated, very carefully and precisely carved to swell at each joint where a thin channel highlights the joint to resemble a shoot of bamboo. These tenon through the crest rail, many actually peeking over the rail now from years of shrinking and expanding. The seat has wonderful form, being softly scooped out and shaped, a shallow channel framing the gallery of spindles along the back. The four legs tenon into, but not through, the seat surface, leaving it undisturbed by anything but the deep and wonderful pitting and oxidization that has become it's patina. Deep in the grooves and cracks, small remnants of the original green paint add to this, leaving a piece of it's history behind. The underside of the seat has more of this dark milk paint, mingled amongst the nearly black oxidization and staining throughout. The maple legs mirror the spindles, though with much embellishment, swelling sharply at each joint and tapering down at the feet. Maple has the wonderful distinction of being crisp and tight when carved, the reason why it is used in most windsor legs - on the bamboo design, this becomes particularly attractive. An H-form stretcher locks the legs in perfect balance.
This is a very fine hoopback windsor, an excellent selection for anyone passionate about this form. Crafted in the height of the period, with the remnants of it's original color and undisturbed construction, this is a chair you will cherish and enjoy. If well cared for, this chair will last many generations while still being fully functional for daily enjoyment.
Measurements: 19" wide x 15" deep x 36" high; seat is 16" high over the ground

This listing is for a Near Set of Four Carved Walnut Italian Chairs, probably of the late 18th century. Each chair is carefully carved with an urn form pierced splat, incredibly detailed in the likeness of a harp over pillars. Two of the chairs have stunning carved molded frames, two have slightly more plain molded frames. Chairs are fully pegged construction, several with tenon mortised frames locked together with small pegs. The aprons are nicely outlined. The front legs reach through the top of the seat, uniquely showing above the upholstery before tapering into the leg. Each leg is carved, though legs bare minor variation between several in the carvings. An H-form stretcher locks the legs firmly in place.
For the collector willing to do some restoration work, this set is a rare aquisition in wonderful form. A deep oxidization covers the entire set, with a glowing patina throughout. They have an incredible sense of class, with attention to detail in each carving, but also balanced variation in each chair making them a study as well as a functional set of furniture. These are very classy and stylish additions to any home, with the careful hand craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout. Approximate measurements for each chair (listed in no particular order)
