Chippendale Period Armless Upholstered Side Chair Mahogany and presumably American circa 1780-90
Visit us at www.sillafineantiques.com for a full slideshow of pictures as well as a large selection of other fine furniture!
This gorgeous chair has a softly serpentine crest over a slightly backswept upholstered back. The stiles are full length of mahogany, stretching from the crest through the feet to create an incredibly strong frame, the legs being square, canted with chamfered interior corners. The upholstered seat is stuffed over the softly serpentine frame, mirroring the light wave of the crest. Marlboro legs with cut molded outer corners are stretched with an H-form box stretcher, the center bar dovetailed into the side stretchers from the underside with single ear dovetails. The old finish is worn and full of character, a deep wonderful patina glowing through the legs and stretcher.
This is a gorgeous chair for anyone with a passion for the Chippendale era, hand carved and crafted with unusually broad comfortable proportions. With outstanding construction and strength in all joints, it makes a fine practical piece in front of a period desk or in a hallway beside a small table. This is just the accent piece needed for a formal setting and a chair your family will enjoy for many generations.
Note: We have not removed the upholstery from the chair to examine secondary woods. We presume this to be American from the design, but there are not enough design elements to be positive without undressing the frame. We leave that to the buyer to determine. If this is important to you, please examine the images below prior to purchase.

23 1/4" wide x 21" deep x 38 1/4" high; seat rests 17 1/2" over ground

Very Fine French Louis XV Style Gilt Painted Carved Fauteuil Arm Chair
France, circa 1850-75
Visit us at www.sillafineantiques.com for a full slideshow of pictures as well as a large selection of other fine furniture!
The detail in this chair is simply outstanding, with masterfully executed carvings flowing across the entire frame, it's gold gilt paint oxidizing and wearing into an incredibly fine patina and a deep upholstery bringing old country comfort to this work of art. The crest is carved with a familiar floral arrangement, flowing down into the molded frame and crawling outwards from it. Two carved finials top a square molded frame, with deep infinity designs carved along the center and foliage spilling down from a rosette motif. These flank a broad upholstered trapezoidal back, flowing down into two upholstered arms with carved arm rests. The top of each arm rest has a tiny filled peg, masking a screw that beneath the wood locks the support into the arm rest. Each arm rest curves inward, with deep carved molding and leafing at the bottom. The deep seat is stuffed over the frame, rimmed by the infinity design carved around the entire apron, broken only by the swirled rosette at the center and both corners above the legs. The frame rests over four cabriole legs terminating over french toes.
This fine work of art is a must-have for any collector of the Louis XV design, or the designer with a formal room in need of a focal point. It is a conversation piece as well as a wonderful seating piece for practical regular use. It is strong, comfortable and gorgeous - all the elements of well designed formal decor. It is a chair that will be treasured in your home for several generations.

Boylston Antiques is Proud to Offer for Sale
A Spindle Back Stenciled Cottage Side Chair C. 1860-1875
A Spindle Back Cottage Side Chair with a stenciled crest rail. The crest rail is slightly concave, about 3 inches wide, with the upper edge a continuous flat curve. The lower edge is scroll arched. The ends of the rail extend beyond the vase and ring turned back uprights. Between this rail and a conforming cross slat are four vase, knob and ring turned spindles.
• The crest rail is stenciled with gold floral and leaf forms on a black ground. The black ground is rimmed with mustard.
• The cane seat is a simplified shield shape. The cane is in good condition for its age.
• The front legs are tapered, cylinder, knob and ring turned.
• The rear legs are a continuation of the rear stiles, plain turned, tapered and flaired.
• The rear stiles are vase, knob and ring turned, with olive-green bands rimmed by mustard on each side.
• The front stretcher is vase and ring turned, with an olive green band ringed by mustard.
• The double side stretchers and single rear stretcher are plain.
• The crest rail height is 33†from the floor.
• The seat sits 17 1/2†from the floor.
• The seat is 15 1/2†wide at the front, tapering down to 12 ½†at the rear.
• The seat depth is 15â€.
• The chair weight is 7 pounds.
A drawing of this type of chair may be found on P. 74 of Thomas Ormsbee’s book entitled “A Field Guide to American Victorian Furnitureâ€.
This chair is in as found condition. The surface patina is nicked, worn and flaked, as expected in a chair approaching 153 years of age. The chair joints are not really loose but somewhat fragile. The chair rocks slightly under weight; this would not be a good chair for heavy use. This style of chair is dainty and meant more for display. There is a vintage repair to some cracks on the rear right leg and some vintage repairs to the rear seat stile.
This chair may be picked up in Boylston, MA.

Beautiful set of 4 antique English carved rosewood dining or parlor chairs, imported from England and dating back to C.1860.
Each chair has hand carved scrolls accentuating the elegant shape of the curved back. The sides and front of each chair also feature the hand carved scroll work.
The front cabriole legs boast beautiful hand carved acanthus detail and the back legs are a long curved continuation of the chair back.
The chair seats and backs are upholstered in the original brown leather with studded trim. There are some small tears in 3 of the chair seats but as you can see in the pictures they are not very big. The padding is still comfortable and in good shape so they could most definitely be used as is.
There has been a very old repair to the top back of one chair shown in the pictures. As you can see it has aged well with the chair and only adds to it's character and charm.
These chairs display pure Victorian grandeur with a touch of elegance. They are constructed of solid rosewood which has developed a wonderful aged patina with minor wear and flaws appropriate for their age. They are in solid, sturdy condition.
Dimensions: width 20 1/2", depth 21 1/2", seat height 17", back height 34 1/4".

Rustic carved oak country hall chair, imported from England and dating back to the 17th century.
What a fantastic piece of centuries old English history this chair is. It is constructed from solid oak with wooden peg joints and a hand carved back.
The wear to the stretchers and seat front is magnificent and is something that only centuries of use can develop.
There is a thin drip of stain on the back which we chose not to remove and refinish in order to preserve as much originality of this age old chair. There is wear throughout the piece which is shown in the pictures and only adds to its character and charm. It is in solid sturdy condition with age appropriate flaws.

This chair was found in an old house in Lancaster, MA. There was a Shaker colony directly to the east of Lancaster in Harvard, MA, and another directly to the north of Lancaster in Shirley, MA. We cannot say that this is definitely a Shaker chair, but it does have a certain characteristics of the Shaker style, with its fairly plain stiles and stretchers. It is most certainly made by hand. There is a certain uneven quality to its construction; the left hand facing rear stile is 45†in height while the right hand facing rear stile is 44 ½†in height; however, the vasiform turnings at the base of the legs are of uniform height. There are hand-made square nails used in its construction.
This is a four (4) slat ladder back arm chair which retains an old stained surface.
It has four back slats which are curved on top and flat on the bottom, indicating a New England origin. The slats are made of oak; the rest of the chair is most probably ash or maple. The rush seat is in useable condition; there are several small areas of broken rush but the seat is still sturdy.
It has shaped arms terminating in round pad hand rests which show plenty of wear.
The stiles are topped with acorn and nipple finials which also display a great deal of wear.
The plain turned double front stretchers also display wear.
The legs terminate in vasiform turnings below the lower stretchers. The front stiles display the same vasiform turnings above the seat rail and below the hand rests.
• Rear stile height is 45â€/44 ½ †from floor.
• Seat height is 16 ½â€.
• Seat width at front is 17â€.
• Seat width at rear is 15 ½â€.
• Seat depth is 14â€.
• Width at top of stiles is 15 ½â€.
• There are 7 stretchers; 2 on each side, two in the front and one at the rear.
• Weight is 13 lbs.
This chair is solid and sturdy; the joints are tight and the rush is serviceable, although broken in several small places. The old stained surface is worn, especially on the arms, the front stretchers and the backs of the slats. There are nicks and scratches on the legs, stiles and slats, expected in a chair approaching 220 years of age.
This chair may be picked up in Boylston, MA. We can arrange for delivery within 100 miles.
Please e-mail for a delivery estimate with your location and particulars.
If shipping is needed, please email for a quote to your destination.
All items are sold "as is". This is an antique piece of furniture; small nicks and scratches are part of the beauty of an antique and are not described unless significant.
