Beautiful antique high relief sculptured gilt iron shield with a horned mythological lion like high relief sculptured head at the very bottom. On either side are 2 seated figures one looks like an angel the other looks like Father Time. The central portion has battling warriors on horseback with shields, spears, and swords. Please click any picture for enlargements of details. The shield measures 20 inches high by 17 inches wide. From the back of the shield to the high relief sculptured top it measures 3 inches deep. Weight 21.75 lbs. The back of the shield has a very secure hanging device or it may be attached to a wood backing if one so desires. The back has an oval maker's mark and reads Musterschutz 5736. Musterschutz is a patent name for German pieces similar to Geschutz that we see on Austrian and Vienna bronzes. The shield is in mint condition guaranteed to please as are all our items.
