Since then, the mahogany has developed a lovely patina that has come to enrich the wispy grain and lustrous complexion of the wood, which is complemented by wonderful solid-brass hardware. This bureau is also quite versatile, since the bureau not only houses a generous amount of storage space with its four-drawer design, but also provides an attractive work space that features a variety of drawers and compartments. Even the original key remains with the bureau, so the drawers and fall lock, although some of the lower drawer locks operate with slight difficulty. Each drawer features hand-cut dovetailed joints, which is a sturdy method of drawer construction and indicates fine craftsmanship. Also, the bureau is made of solid oak with mahogany veneers, which was considered a high-quality practice for hundreds of years before the twentieth century. Because of this excellent construction and design, this bureau has sustained very little noticeable wear over the past two hundred years, with only a few old stress marks and a broken interior knob.
