Description: This handsome pair of 12-inch diameter library globes is made up of twelve hand coloured engraved gores made Circa 1840. The stands are possibly made by Gillows and circa 1810. The compasses are replaced.

The terrestrial globe with a trade label that reads: SMITH'S TERRESTRIAL GLOBE Containing the whole of THE LATEST DISCOVERIES AND Geographical Improvements also the TRACKS of the most celebrated Circumnavigators LONDON C. SMITH & SON 172 STRAND.

The celestial with a trade label that reads: SMITH'S CELESTIAL GLOBE Containing all the known stars nebulae. Additional Information: Charles Smith and Son was a firm begun in 1799 principally as publishers of maps with Charles Smith holding the position of engraver to the Prince of Wales. The firm began making pocket globes and later expanded its business to compete with the Cary family business. The firm had offices at 172 The Strand from 1827 to 1852 and then moved to 63 Charing Cross in 1870 before eventually being taken over by George Philip & Son who reissued the Smith globes.
