A well preserved pair of Inca leather sandals and braid of hair. This child's sandals and hair are from a mummified bundle that appear to represent the Inca Capacocha, a sacrificial rite involving children in honor of the Sun and other deities. Children were chosen from locations throughout the empire and brought to the capital city of Cuzco, where they were dressed and adorned with miniature artifacts, treated to ceremonial rites and feasts, and then redistributed throughout the Inca realm for sacrifice at major mountain top shrines.
Both sandals and hair were obtained simultaneously and will not be parted. In Fine condition. Peru, AD 1400-1532. Sandals measure approx. 5.5" 14cm. Hair measures 27" 65.58cm.
