circa: 2000 width: 37 height: 36 length: 21 This exquisite mahogany bachelors chest is the product of a full restoration of an English Military chest, dating back to just after the Second World War, most likely about 1970. This chest has been re-made with stunning mahogany veneers and intricate satinwood inlays, including optional fan-inlay designs on the top as well as banding around the top and drawer fronts. Crafted using a traditional two-over-three drawer design, each drawer boasts brass swan neck handles and dovetailed joints, just like those found in antique furniture. Resting on sturdy shaped bracket feet, these chests are strong, beautiful and will continue to grow more beautiful for generations to come!   « Less

Alexander the Great, son of Philip II of Macedon, is arguably the most important historical figure in the ancient world. Born on July 20th, 356 BC, he was an astute, if somewhat headstrong student, and was schooled by various famous teachers, notably Aristotle. By the time of his death at the age of 32, he had personally supervised one of the largest land-based military expeditions of all time, and had conquered the whole of the then known world from Asia Minor across the whole of Persia, Anatolia, Syria, Phoenicia, Judea, Gaza, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Bactria, parts of India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. A legend in his own lifetime, he became known as much for his excesses and cruelty as his extraordinary military prowess but was nonetheless a comparatively fair and temperate man. Perhaps due to his supposed descent from Achilles and Herakles, he essentially became deified during the Hellenistic period. The Greeks celebrated Alexander in art and song, and his legend continued under the Romans, who had a fascination with military campaigns and tactics. How many hands have touched a coin in your pocket or your purse? What eras and lands have the coin traversed on its journey into our possession? As we reach into our pockets to pull out some change, we rarely hesitate to think of who touched the coin before us, or where the coin will venture to after us. More than money, coins are a symbol of the state that struck them, of a specific time and place, whether currency in the age we live or an artifact of a long forgotten empire. Worth a month’s pay, a silver coin like this would have rewarded the bravery and fortitude of the officers serving under one of history’s most celebrated generals, Alexander the Great. While his vast kingdom dissolved after his death, the carefully cultivated legend of Alexander will continue to live on not only in our history books and museums, but also in artifacts like this coin: concrete remnants of ancient empires passed from the hands of civilization to civilization, from generation to generation. - (C.4970)   « Less

Circa 1730 Chinese Export Famille Rose Very Unusual and Very Large Mandarin Palette Mug/Tankard with Tobacco Leaf, Red and Gold, Circa 1730. The tankard has many nice attributes including a stylized dragon motiff in red along the spine of the handle, four tobacco leaves flanking the handle terminals and a host of other symbols. Their are several clusters of pine, prunus (wild plum trees) and rocks that denote simplicity, longevity and late winter. The age of this tankard is between 1720-1745 which means it is either late Kangxi (K'ang-hsi), Yongzheng (Yung-cheng) or Early Quianlong (Ch'ien-lung). If any Chinese Export Collector can refine this please let me know. This Tankard measures over 5 1/2" in height and the diameter at the top opening is 5". This is a mug of not only a unusual decoration but very different colors than we have had in the mandarin palette. We have never seen a mug with the tobacco leaf pattern included into a pattern of the mandarin palette mug. Gold background with some normal wear and a large scene of four figures under a tree and encircled with a vine of flowers and tobacco leaves. On each side of this landscape scene is a house and mountain scene in the lotus color. This complete scene covers about 75% of the mug. The last quadrant which is on each side of the handle has a rose with tobacco leaves. The top border of blue and white might mean that it was made for the english market. The bottom of the mug has a orange like border. Their is a firing mark on the inside of the handle. Also in the eighth image, the brown spot on the base of the mug must have been in the making. Very Good Condition. No Restoration.   « Less

He possessed the rare mixture of soldierly courage and the diplomacy of a seasoned senator. This extraordinary measure was implemented in order to stabilize the empire, and prevent the internecine troubles that had so plagued the imperial throne. Diocletian's reforms in provincial redistribution, military reorganization and monetary changes (resulting in a radical reform of the coinage), were far-reaching and enlightened. It is not so surprising that such a man should decide to relinquish his title and seek quiet retirement at Split in modern Croatia.
