Superb 18th C American Chippendale Massachusetts double shell carved reverse serpentine maple slant lid desk. The solid sloped lid opening to a well balanced double stepped interior, fitted with a stack of two prospect drawers, with a wonderful shell carved center drawer with shell and scoop carving flanked by document drawers faced with baluster turnings further flanked by valanced cubbyholes and individual finely dovetailed drawers, the case fitted with four long graduated serpentine drawers, on a molded base with a center shell carved pendent on four finely sculpted claw and ball feet with ogee bracket base. Height: 44'' Width: 42 inches, Depth: 21 1/2'' at case All carved elements and interior dovetailed drawers are original to the desk. Circa: 1760-1785 Original period hardware which was on the desk when purchased has been recently polished, but Is not the first set. This superb desk has survived in an outstanding state of original preservation with a wonderful mellow amber nut brown patina. Origin: North Shore Salem or Boston, Massachusetts community.
