A very rare no nonsense large battle sword, undoubtedly made for a Landsknecht soldier circa 1525! Wonderful example of early hand forged ironwork that features a large double scroll counter-guard!
The sword’s blade is of exceptional quality and is 33 ½” long x 1 5/8” wide! It is identical in form, but much, much longer, than katzbalgers of that period (the short swords that Landsknecht soldiers carried for close fighting in battle).
Excellent condition overall. From an old German collection that was sold off several years ago. An important addition to the early renaissance sword collection!

ON SALE!
Was $1,595.
A rare French dagger made for concealment on one’s body or in one’s boot! This beautiful and rare dagger dates to circa 1660 and its guard is of the same pattern often used on “town swords” (also called pillow swords or walking swords). A sword with this type guard was owned and worn by Charles X of Sweden at the time of his death in 1660 and is pictured as plate 99 in the book “The Rapier and Small-Sword 1460 – 1820” by Norman.
This beauty of a 17th century dagger features an 8” double sided blade, made exclusively for stabbing. Its iron guard retains much of its original gold guilt! It is decorated with fauna and if you look close you will see a central design of a soldier with his horse flanked by another soldier and armor with the reverse side decorated with a central seated figure bearing arms and also flanked the same way!
The dagger’s sleek, flattened design enables it to be concealed close to the body and its crosshatched ebony grip gives it a better grasp for a quick draw. Overall 13 ½” long.
Overall excellent, as found, condition with no repairs or restorations!

A rare Nubian (Blackmoore, negro) head pommel small sword circa 1675 with a magnificent chiseled hilt and a fantastic full length engraved blade! Best of its type we have ever seen in over 50 years of collecting and dealing!
Its nicely detailed Nubian head still retains much of its original black Japanning while its braided wire grip retains all original wire wraps and both Turk’s head ferrules! Its knucklebow and quillon are decorated with entwined rope work and brick-work checkering while its ricasso features twin fish in a circular pattern. The beautifully pierced and chiseled counter-guards are decorated both sides with entwined serpents with bird like heads all around the edges. Entwined ropework brick-work checkering along with the twin fish central design beautifully complement the entire hilt!
Its 30.5” hexagonal blade is engraved full length (save for about 3” of the tip) with lattice work, fauna, flowers and the medieval Christian knightly motto “RECTE FACIENDO MENINEM TIMEAS” (Latin for do right, fear no one)
This spectacular specimen of a 17th century sword would have belonged to a well to do man of the sea. Perhaps a ship’s captain or even the captain of a slave ship! An extremely rare, museum worthy, offering!

An extremely rare form is this C 1675 Spanish or French, spiral openwork hilted sword! One of only 3 examples that we have noted that incorporate spirally forged openwork bars.
The others: One, in relic condition, is pictured in Eric Valentine’s “Rapiers” and the other was sold in a Czerny’s, Italy auction several years ago.
Our sword features a 33 ¼”, 3 fuller back-sword blade. Much worn with some very minor pitting. Its tall forged, chiseled and profusely engraved hilt features intricately engraved, spirally twisted, re-curved quillons with heart finials. Its grip is composed of spirally twisted forged bars that also are intricately engraved all over. The outer ring guard and quillon block are beautifully chiseled and engraved with crossed arms and shields. The tall pyramidal pommel features a wonderfully engraved Green Man face on both sides!
The extremely rare sword exhibits the finest workmanship of the time. Most probably made to wear for parades or ceremonies and worthy of the finest museum!

Glass display case - 12 (w) x12 (d) x18 (h).Description: An iron mask with a gilded interior. The face has very deep wrinkles on the cheeks and a very large detachable beak shaped nose and a protruding chin. This half mask includes a three-lame throat guard which has been lacquered black. Presently displayed on a lucite stand within a bespoke glass display case.Provenance: Private New England CollectionAdditional Information: Japanese Samaruai masks are known by many names including; mempo / menpo hanbo / hambo and somen. Menpo/Mempo are face masks that cover only half of the face (the present example is a Mempo) while Somen are full face masks and Hanbo/Hambo are masks that only cover the cheeks. The samurai were the warrior class in Japan that served to protect the nobility and first appeared in the 9th century. The origins of the Samaruai were considered civilians and had to provide their own weapons and were the first organized army in Japan. Later feudal lords developed their own armies instilling the idea that it was shameful not to have risked ones life in the line of duty and thus the modern idea of the Samurai was created.
